PUNGGOL East may face a five-way battle if a by-election is called in the single-seat ward.

Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer has quit as member of parliament and as a member of the People's Action Party (PAP).

A press conference was called this afternoon to announce his resignation.

The Hougang by-election is down to the last day of campaigning today and both contenders are expected to come out punching in their final rallies.

In the blue corner is Mr Png Eng Huat, representing defending champion Workers’ Party which has held the seat for two decades.
