Best known for his role as Jim Rockford of the 1970s television series, The Rockford Files, James Garner was found dead in his Los Angeles home on July 19.
He had a series of medical problems which included a stroke in 2008.
The actor who had also starred in The Notebook and opposite Mel Gibson in the 1994 big-screen take on the Maverick, had one of the longest lasting weddings in Hollywood history.
Born in Oklahoma in 1928, Garner married his wife Lois just two weeks after meeting her in 1956.
His last name was actually Bumgarner but he changed it to Garner after a Hollywood studio credited him as “James Garner” without permission.
In The Great Escape and Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys, Garner played heroes. He was a hero off-screen too and during the Korean war, Garner received two Purple Hearts after being injured in two separate incidents.
