Dennis Chew graduates from Ngee Ann Polytechnic at 51
Local radio personality and host Dennis Chew has proven that it's never too late to hit the books.
The 51-year-old celebrated a significant milestone this week, graduating from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) after three years of juggling full-time studies with his demanding broadcasting career.
Chew, a familiar face on local television and a beloved voice on the airwaves, earned his diploma in Chinese Media and Communication, culminating in a final presentation on the morning of Feb 10.
Taking to Instagram to share the good news with his followers, the popular DJ expressed his gratitude to the numerous individuals who supported him throughout his academic journey.
"Studying has never been easy, and you only truly understand that when you go through it yourself," Chew reflected candidly.
He detailed how the rigorous programme instilled in him a renewed sense of self-discipline, while also equipping him with practical skills like video editing, efficient scriptwriting and critical thinking.
The experience, he noted, also improved his ability to connect with younger generations.
Chew's Instagram post overflowed with heartfelt thanks, starting with NP for accepting him into the programme.
He affectionately referred to his classmates as his "dear babies" who call him "Lao Ba", demonstrating the close bonds forged during his time at the polytechnic.
He also acknowledged the encouragement he received from his lecturers and the support from his classmates.
Beyond the classroom, Chew expressed his appreciation for the company where he completed his six-month internship, and to his radio colleagues: Chen Biyu, Marcus Chin and Mark Lee.
He specifically thanked Mediacorp for accommodating his academic pursuits while allowing him to continue his on-air duties, and also acknowledged the "positive energy" he received from friends in the media.
Lastly, he addressed his followers directly: "Through these three years, you have stayed by my side, giving me the strength to keep moving forward."
Chew's decision to embark on this academic pursuit stemmed from a desire for self-improvement following his All-Time Favourite Artiste win at the Star Awards in April 2022.
At the time, he spoke about wanting to better understand himself, his profession, and the youth of today.
He also revealed that many of his industry peers were NP alumni, a factor that further solidified his decision to enrol in the school.
His hard work paid off in September 2024 when he received the Edusave Certificate of Academic Achievement, awarded to students in the top 25 per cent of their cohort.
