International model Andrej Pejic comes out as transgender

The international model, who will now be known as Andreja Pejic, who stormed onto the runways in 2011 has come out as a transgender woman earlier today.

Pejic,22, was known for her androgynous look and walked for both menswear and womenswear for some of the top designers in the world including Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier.

This has always been a dream for the Australian model.

"I always dreamt of being a girl. One of my earliest memories is spinning around in my mum's skirt trying to  look like a ballerina," she said.

She revealed that gender reassignment surgery had always been in the works as a teenager.

"I was going to finish high school as Andrej, transition, and forget about my male past," she said.

But she was soon scouted at the age of 17 by a modelling agent. She put her surgery on pause to gain some financial stability.

"But about a year and a half ago, I re-evaluated things," said Pejic, who has been included on lists for top male and female models.

"I was proud of my gender non-conforming career. But my biggest dream was to be comfortable in my own body. I have to be true to myself and the career is just going to have to fit around that."
