Amy Adams joins Tim Burton's bevy of big-eyed babes. Who made our Top 10?
Tim Burton's new film Big Eyes tells the true story of Margaret Keane, whose paintings of saucer-eyed waifs became a sensation in the 60s.
Opening here tomorrow, it is one of his most personal films to date.
It is the story of the very dysfunctional relationship between Margaret (Amy Adams) and her fast-talking husband Walter (Christoph Waltz), who takes the credit for her art and makes them a fortune.
But his dishonesty ends up ripping them apart and things get ugly in court.
The reason Big Eyes seems like such a natural fit for the idiosyncratic 56-year-old US director is that he seems to have a thing for leading ladies who look like they belong in one of Keane's artworks.
From Winona Ryder to Christina Ricci to Helena Bonham Carter, he has always put them in his movies.
He even ended up settling down with Bonham Carter, though they recently separated.
Behold the Top 10 Burton beauties blessed with big ones - eyes, that is:
10 BELLA HEATHCOTE
DARK SHADOWS (2012)
Out of all of Burton's waifs, the 27-year-old Australian is arguably the waifiest.
Lovely and delicate with gargantuan eyes, she looks like a real-life Keane painting.
She gets a low ranking at No. 10 because Dark Shadows is one of Burton's lesser flicks and she was pretty forgettable in it as Johnny Depp's lover.
9 LISA MARIE
MARS ATTACKS! (1996)
Marie, 46, showed off her big eyes in Mars Attacks! as spooky alien Martian Girl.
She does not say a word, but her eyes do a great job of conveying an extraterrestrial nonchalance.
Burton liked Marie so much, the pair were engaged from 1993 to 2001, during which time she appeared in a few other small roles.
Burton left her for Bonham Carter.
8 ANNE HATHAWAY
ALICE IN WONDERLAND (2010)
Not the biggest role in the movie, but certainly the biggest eyeballs.
Dressed all in white as the White Queen, Hathaway's black-rimmed eyes stood out beautifully.
The 32-year-old has a pair of the most expressive brown eyes in Hollywood.
7 ANNASOPHIA ROBB
CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (2005)
Robb's large eyes looked even larger when she played the bratty bubblegum kid Violet, who suffered the fate of turning into a giant blueberry.
Fortunately, the 21-year-old has had better luck with her career.
6 EVA GREEN
DARK SHADOWS (2012)
Put simply, the French femme fatale has enormous, crazy-looking eyes that are terrifying to behold and that will likely turn you to stone.
In this vampire flick, the 34-year-old used her blue-green assets to great effect as a bonkers, lovesick witch.
5 AMY ADAMS
BIG EYES (2014)
The lovely 40-year-old may not have the biggest eyes in Hollywood, but she gets bonus points for playing the painter Keane, who created the whole "big eye" genre.
At one point in the film, Burton uses special effects to make it look like Adams has enormous eyes like her subject, and the effect is both chilling and strangely sexy. At least to me.
4 CHRISTINA RICCI
SLEEPY HOLLOW (1999)
The odd thing about Ricci is that she did not end up making a lot more movies for Burton.
Cute and weird with giant, mischief-filled eyes on a baby-doll face, the 34-year-old is exactly his type.
At least we will always have Sleepy Hollow, where she played Johnny Depp's girlfriend and the token damsel in distress.
3 MICHELLE PFEIFFER
BATMAN RETURNS (1992)
Pfeiffer's cat-shaped, wide-spaced eyes are not necessarily huge, but they are perfect.
She had one of her signature roles as Catwoman in Batman Returns, and Burton managed to wring out every ounce of her latent kinkiness.
The 56-year-old veteran and Burton reunited for Dark Shadows, and she still looked perfect.
2 HELENA BONHAM CARTER
SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET (2007)
The English actress is the one who finally snagged Burton, and the couple ended up having two kids together.
Her eyes are pretty big, but they seem even bigger because she is so expressive with them, often opening them up wide to look extra nuts.
Playing the lovelorn and creepy pie-maker, Mrs Lovett, in Sweeney Todd, she personifies the dark side of big eyes, a waif gone wrong.
Now 48, Bonham Carter has appeared in a bunch of Burton's movies, including Planet Of The Apes, Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Dark Shadows and Alice In Wonderland.
1 WINONA RYDER
BEETLEJUICE (1988), EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990)
The ultimate Burton big-eyed babe is undoubtedly Ryder.
As a teenager, she appeared in two of his earliest successes, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands.
It was with Beetlejuice that Burton used Ryder to set the template for so many of his future loopy leading ladies - young, small, quirky and of course, big-eyed.
Playing the ghost-seeing daughter of a haunted couple, she was his waifish Goth muse, and it seems like he never got over her.
He cast her as the romantic interest in Edward Scissorhands, and it is easy to imagine that he was as smitten with her as the title character played by Johnny Depp.
The unique thing about Ryder, 43, is that she did not just have the right look, but also the right character, to embody Burton's singular aesthetic. She never had to play at being a weirdo.
