God only knows why it's so cool
God Only Knows is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written.
Don't take my word for it.
None other than Sir Paul McCartney called it his favourite song of all time.
When it first debuted as a single way back in 1966, it wasn't a huge hit, but it has since become a classic.
It was just one of many classics on The Beach Boys' seminal Pet Sounds album, which also included Wouldn't It Be Nice and Caroline, No.
I myself am partial to Sloop John B. It's good stuff.
The one thing that has always been kind of weird about The Beach Boys is that they've never had the same cool factor as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones.
I think this is because of their name.
"The Beach Boys" just sounds lame.
It's like when I tell people I like Teen Wolf, they just assume the show is stupid, and that I'm stupid.
A lot of knowledgeable music lovers may dig The Beach Boys, but there will always be a certain number of people who won't take them seriously because of the name.
I mean, why didn't they just go with "White Bread" or "The Bee's Knees".
When I was a teen, I assumed they were a joke and it wouldn't surprise me if today's teens made the same assumption.
Beach music? Pshaw.
Each new generation has to discover the awesomeness of The Beach Boys for itself. For this generation, their introduction will surely come from BBC Music's new tribute to God Only Knows.
They've managed to wrangle some of the greatest stars in the world (and Chris Martin) to perform the song and appear in the spectacular music video.
Everyone from Lorde and One Direction to Stevie Wonder and Sir Elton John are on board.
Unfortunately, the song ends up sounding a bit of a patchwork because each singer gets just one line.
In the end, the one performer who really does manage to break through is the mighty Brian Wilson, the founder of The Beach Boys and the composer of their most memorable tunes.
That voice. Even though it's been hammered by time (Wilson's story is a true heartbreaker), it still shines.
The guy's a legit musical genius.
For those of you out there who have yet to discover The Beach Boys, listen to this tribute and then go check out the real thing. You can thank me later.
