Sam Smith's broken heart wins him four awards at the 2015 Grammy's

Sam Smith had a huge night at the Grammy Awards, picking up four awards, three of them in major categories: Best New Artist, Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year for his hit Stay With Me.

Collecting his award for Record Of The Year, the British singer thanked the man who broke his heart for the four-award haul.

But it wasn’t quite a clean sweep. Beck surprised everyone with an Album Of The Year win for Morning Phase.

Beck won over Beyoncé which led to a further surprise as Kanye West - in an uncharacteristicly jovial mood - tried to repeat his infamous award show moment as he jokingly hopped on stage to complain.

West was in fine form during the evening. Earlier on the red carpet, he was discussing with Ryan Seacrest the vast range of projects he is working on.

Seacrest tried to sound incisive with: "So that attention-deficit disorder is a good thing.”

West's sharp and soon-to-go-viral reply? "It's also just called thinking."

But while West was having a blast, the a number of moments during the show proved rather serious, such as Katy Perry’s song dedicated to a survivor of domestic violence.

Pharrel William's reworking of Happy started with an ominous orchestral movement before launching into what many consider one of the best performances in the show.

Dressed as a bellhop and leading a huge cast, Williams was joined by composer Hans Zimmer who was rocking a mariachi-style outfit

Here are some of the other big moments of the night and the list of winners for the main awards
