Was putting Sofia Vergara on a rotating pedestal sexist? Actress responds
The Emmys appeared to have misfired when they put Modern Family star Sofia Vergara on a rotating platform while the Television Arts and Sciences president gave a speech.
Vergara, who is one of the highest paid actresses on TV, played along and awkwardly struck poses in her figure hugging dress before ending the segment with "That's why I stopped doing car shows".
The skit was intended as an ironic comment on how boring these speeches can be - but online media immediately labelled it as sexist and claimed it objectified the comedian.
Sofia Vergara made a statement about the controversy, saying that she felt the joke represented "absolutely the opposite" of objectification.
The Independent reported her saying: "It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself."
