Eggslut shutters Scotts Square outlet, exits Singapore market

After opening to much fanfare in 2021, famed American chain Eggslut quietly shut its last store at Scotts Square on Feb 28, marking its exit from Singapore.

In response to queries from The Straits Times, Eggslut Singapore confirmed the brand's departure, which is in line with its exit from South Korea in 2024 as well. Its other outlet at Suntec City, which opened in 2022, shut in 2024. The last post on @eggslutsg's Instagram page was in May 2024.

Eggslut's other overseas outlets are in London and Tokyo, although the main @eggslut account still lists Singapore and Hong Kong as locations for the brand. In Hong Kong, Eggslut shut on Feb 23 with an Instagram post saying "We'll be back".

The egg sandwich specialist started as a food truck in Los Angeles in 2011 and launched its flagship location at the city's Grand Central Market in 2013.

Over the years, it became known for its signature Fairfax sandwich with soft scrambled eggs, chives, caramelised onions, cheddar cheese and sriracha mayonnaise; and Slut, a coddled egg on housemade potato puree in a glass jar topped with grey salt and chives, served with a sliced baguette. The word "eggslut" refers to a chef adding an egg to everything.

It entered Singapore - as the brand's first foray into South-east Asia - via South Korea-based food company SPC Group, which also brought in bakery chain Paris Baguette and New York burger chain Shake Shack.

Eggslut's departure from Singapore joins other recent closures, including London's famed Burger & Lobster chain, which shuts its final outlet at Jewel Changi Airport on March 10; and the pending exit of Smoke & Mirrors bar and Cantonese restaurant Yan from National Gallery Singapore on March 15.
