School of frock

Thanks to all the ongoing film festivals and New York Fashion Week shindigs, there's plenty of top-notch style to go around

ZHANG ZIYI (A)

Premiere of The Magnificent Seven at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto

Gown: Elie Saab

We've missed her on the red carpet ever since she stepped out of the spotlight to get married and have a baby, but Zhang sure knows how to make a regal comeback as one of the festival's international jurors this year. I still can't decide if I love or loathe the patchwork print, but her overall grace and elegance can't be beat.

DAKOTA FANNING (A-)

Premiere of Brimstone at the Venice Film Festival in Venice

Gown: Miu Miu

Her hair and make-up game may be weak, but the iridescent sparkly awesomeness is all my Little Mermaid childhood dreams come true.

SUKI WATERHOUSE (A-)

Premiere of The Bad Batch at the Venice Film Festival in Venice

Gown: Dolce & Gabbana

Here's yet another bejewelled sensation that's got me going gaga, this time in shimmering pink. I'm in sequin heaven.

KATIE HOLMES (C+)

Cartier Fifth Avenue Mansion Reopening Party in New York

Gown: Valentino

Usually such whimsical, embroidered sheer Valentino frocks would shoot straight to the top of my class, but Holmes doesn't do them justice. This particular version is shapeless, ageing and makes her look like she's wearing a package of old pantyhose over unsightly contrasting shapewear.

RENEE ZELLWEGER (D)

Premiere of Bridget Jones's Baby in Berlin

Dress: Monse

Shoes: Christian Louboutin

From the limp hair to the crazy ruching to the weird parachute single sleeve, this is as sad as mopey singleton Bridget Jones herself. Who let her out in this thing?

MOST IMPROVED

RITA ORA

MTV Video Music Awards in New York, Aug 28

Jacket, dress and shoes: Marc Jacobs

Tom Ford Autumn/Winter 2016 Menswear and Womenswear Collection presentation in New York, Sept 7

Dress and shoes: Tom Ford

It's so easy for Ora to go from bomb to bombshell, one wonders why she doesn't just stick to sexy more. Her clownish, attention-seeking ensemble at the VMAs was well-deserving of being on worst-dressed lists. Fortunately, her makeover is a sight for sore eyes. One can't deny she's working the sultry metallic pink number and matching heels like her life depended on it.
