Star Style: Laureen Uy on her 'evolving' style
Filipino fashion influencer Laureen Uy loves experimenting with her clothes
Filipino fashion influencer Laureen Uy may have 767,000 Instagram followers across Asia hanging on to her fashion tips on www.breakmystyle.com, but she thinks she is "still evolving".
The 27-year-old described her current style as "edgy chic", but stressed that it changes all the time.
"The part I enjoy the most is really experimenting with my clothes," she told The New Paper.
Her biggest fashion influences are her brother Vince, who is creative director for Preview Magazine, a top fashion magazine in the Philippines, and her elder sister Liz, a Filipino version of Colombian fashion director Nina Garcia.
"My siblings inspire me the most. I really look up to them."
UNFORGETTABLE
Uy described her first major purchase - a Balenciaga motorcycle bag - as unforgettable.
"I was in college and I really saved up for it."
For her, cost is not an issue as long as it fits two criteria: "If I know I can use it all the time and if it's worth the money."
Uy was in town over the weekend as a guest at Samsung Fashion Steps Out @ Orchard 2016, an outdoor fashion show held last Saturday along Orchard Road. It had 188 models and a turnout of nearly 182,000 people.
Uy said of the event: "My favourite segments were the Mash-Up and Uniqlo collections because they were really entertaining."
The music lover added: "I also loved the playlist. The soundtrack was really on point with all of the clothes shown.
"Everyone had a great time at the show, not just the invited guests, but anyone who just passed by."
OFF-DUTY LAUREEN
When Uy is on a break, she kicks off her heels.
"It gets very tiring to wear heels every single day, so I'm more comfortable wearing sneakers if I don't have anything more important to do."
To complete the look, she'll be in jeans or a "not so girly skirt".
She picked this vintage skirt because "it's leather and it's black".
She paired her Winona top with a jacket from multi-label shop i.t and Adidas Stan Smith shoes.
Uy also feels her spectacles enhance the casual look.
"My glasses make everything else invisible. So when I wear it, I feel I don't need anything else on my face, just lipstick."
VINTAGE LAUREEN
This vintage jumpsuit, bought in a Paris thrift shop three years ago, is Uy's version of an LBD.
"Back then, I loved brands, but I wasn't into vintage stuff. But I fell in love with this, especially the cut and the style.
"Every time I feel I need a classic piece, I always go for this."
QUIRKY LAUREEN
"Growing up, I would not wear just one brand for the entire outfit. I would always mix and match," said Uy.
This was before US designer Jeremy Scott became creative director of Italian fashion house Moschino in 2013.
"Since then, I started buying all the pieces. I'll wear a Moschino bag with a Moschino dress and (use) a Moschino mobile phone cover."
The label's McDonald's bag is her favourite and also the piece that triggered her love for the collection.
Uy said: "I'm a quirky kind of girl, so too much is never too much."
SEXY LAUREEN
Sexy to Uy is jeans, the colour black and a pair of pointed pumps - her Gianvito Rossi heels being the perfect example.
"I really like pointed pumps with thin heels because it makes a woman's legs look slimmer and (she feels) more confident."
Uy's top is a gift from her sister and the pants are from Zara.
"If you look at the outfit, it's not really sexy, but it's denim and black and that's when I feel sexiest.
"It's sexy in a subtle way."
