Singaporean TV host Diana Ser is facing a milestone - sending her firstborn off to national service (NS).

The 52-year-old star - who is married to former actor James Lye, 55 - posted a clip of the couple shaving their son's hair off on Instagram on April 1. They were preparing 18-year-old Jake for his enlistment.

The clip was taken at a hair salon. It shows the three of them taking turns to use a shaver on Jake's head. Fresh full-time national servicemen are expected to serve with a shaved head.

Ser, the host of current affairs programme Talking Point, wrote in the caption: "So here we go... Mama's not ready."

On April 2, she posted a photo of herself sending her son off to NS in an Instagram Story and said he has enlisted.

While there are barbers available to shave the heads of new enlistees, Ser told local entertainment news outlet 8Days that her son said it was more meaningful to get his head shaved by his parents than some "random barber".

She added that Lye, who starred in Channel 5 police procedural Triple Nine (1995 to 1999) but is now in the finance industry, declared he would have the first shave. The final touches were entrusted to a barber who has been trimming Jake's hair since he was young.

Ser seemed wistful at the idea of her son's enlistment, and said NS marks the first time Jake will be away from home for such a long time.

"His recent grad trip did prepare me a bit, but ultimately, I'm not prepared that my baby has grown up," she said.

Ser and Lye married in 2004 after a nine-year courtship. They also have two younger daughters who are in their teens.
