Miss Universe Singapore 2018: Jaslyn Tan believes never giving up leads to breakthroughs
Miss Jaslyn Tan is no stranger to beauty pageants, having won the title of Miss Singapore Grand International in 2014 and coming second at Miss Teochew last year.
As a finalist in Miss Universe Singapore 2018, the beauty queen is ready to challenge herself further and represent her country on the world stage.
The 26-year-old realtor had been a dancer since kindergarten, during when she explored various genres such as Chinese dance, ballet and contemporary dance. However, due to her battle with hypothyroidism, she stopped dancing after polytechnic to focus on recuperating and getting her health back on track.
Who are your personal icons of beautiful and empowered women?
I admire (model) Miranda Kerr and (actress) Emma Watson because they are not only beautiful but also capable, strong and independent. They are not just models but good role models for all women, as they spread their positivity to empower women to be the best versions of themselves.
This year's theme is The Beauty of Empowerment. What is the most empowering thing you have done in your life?
Empowerment to me is a process. It can be as simple as being a listening ear to support someone in distress, for example.
I encouraged a friend who was suffering from great self-doubt, to the point where she lost the confidence and morale to do everything. I listened to her woes and reminded her about all the things she needed to hear. I made a list of all her accomplishments, no matter how small they might be to her, and that helped her regain her self-confidence.
So I believe empowerment also means being self-encouraged and self-determined. Having a positive and happy mindset goes a long way to make one feel good about oneself.
What is the proudest achievement in your life and what did it teach you?
It was when I earned an Achievers Award earlier this year in the company that I am working for. This is my personal best and breakthrough after plenty of hard work and soul-searching.
Being a realtor, I work hard to effectively advise my clients to gain their trust.
Empowerment to me is a process... I believe empowerment also means being self-encouraged and self-determined.
To achieve that, it takes determination and perseverance, as well as patience to see the fruits of my labour. Beyond that, it also taught me that results do not happen overnight.
Rather, it takes a whole lot of resilience to keep going even if you feel like giving up. I believe strongly that as long as I remain tough and not give up, success will come my way.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Bali and Las Vegas because these places are so vibrant and exciting.
With my busy work schedule, both destinations will definitely help me rejuvenate and take my mind off the stress in Singapore.
I would also love to visit Spain to experience flamenco music live and have a taste of authentic paella.
