Will Uncle Roger eventually show Singaporeans what 'proper' fried rice is?
He went viral in 2020 after his critique of a BBC Food video on how to make fried rice, and now Singaporeans can look forward to potentially getting a taste of his fried rice.
Nigel Ng, 33, is well-known for his hilarious online persona of Uncle Roger, a middle-aged man who deliberately speaks broken English with an exaggerated Cantonese accent.
Ng often does reviews of chefs' takes on Asian food and has over 10 million subscribers on YouTube. He lives by the quote:
"Not a chef, I just complain."
Whether inspired by this motto or not, the Malaysian-born comedian launched Fuiyoh! It's Uncle Roger at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur Mall in September 2024.
He later opened his second outlet at Mytown Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur in December.
The menu features various types of fried rice, priced between RM16 ($4.80) and RM18. Additionally, the restaurant offers side dishes like gyoza, fries and pickle.
Ng's restaurant attracted large crowds on its opening, and popular online influencers including IShowSpeed have also dropped in.
Now it looks like Ng will be opening a third outlet, this time at Johor Bahru.
A cladding of Fuiyoh! It's Uncle Roger was recently spotted at Mid Valley Southkey Mall.
This begs the question: Is Singapore the next stop for the famed fried rice restaurant?
One netizen expressed excitement over a potential opening in Singapore, commenting: "Fuiyoh! Now Singaporeans can taste Uncle Roger's fried rice!"
Ng last visited Singapore in 2022 during his The HAIYAA World Tour, where he hosted two live sold-out comedy stand-up shows.
When asked about the Little Red Dot's local cuisine, the Malaysian comedian bluntly remarked: "You guys just do a weird, less good version of what we do [in Malaysia], to be honest."
His comments quickly sparked a heated debate among netizens, igniting comparisons between Singaporean and Malaysian food.
The New Paper has reached out to Uncle Roger to ask if he will open an outlet in Singapore.
