A 53-year-old mother lost 13kg and donated a kidney to her friend's daughter after discovering that she was suffering from a serious illness.

Ms Rabiah Hussain came across a Facebook post about a patient who had kidney failure and urgently needed a kidney.

She learnt later that the patient was her friend's daughter.

"When I told my friend that I wanted to donate my kidney, she first told me to think about it. But I was firm in my decision," Ms Rabiah told Tamil Murasu.

Her family members were initially concerned about her decision but eventually gave her their full support as she grew more resolute in wanting to donate.

But there was one problem - Ms Rabiah's BMI was too high.

So she went on a diet and started to exercise to reduce her weight from 92kg to 79kg.

"My only concern was that my friend's daughter should live well. I wasn't too concerned with what I had to go through," said Ms Rabiah.

The kidney donation and transplant were successfully carried out last December.

Ms Rabiah, who shared her experience on social media, hoped others would not shy away from organ donation.

"There is no need to be afraid of organ donation," she explained.
