Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco ends marriage after less than two years

She may have just married on screen but happily ever after didn't happen off screen.

Kaley Cuoco, stars of hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory, announced her divorce from professional tennis player Ryan Sweeting yesterday.

Last week, the ninth season of the sitcom premiered and saw 18.2 million US viewers watched Cuoco's character Penny marry Leonard, played by Cuoco's ex, Johnny Galeki.

Back in the real world, Cuoco and Sweeting announced the end of their marriage after 21 months.

The pair had a whirlwind courtship and were engaged in September 2013, just three months after they first met.

Cuoco told Entertainment Tonight about her decision to get hitched: "From day one, I just knew immediately. And it's been magic.

"We grew up with the same people, we just never met. So I kind of feel that I've know him my whole life. I know that it seems a little crazy on paper, but it's what works for us," she added.

They married three months later on New Year's Eve, 2013.

In another example of her on screen life mirroring the off screen, Cuoco wore a pink wedding dress to her real wedding, just as her character did in Big Bang Theory.

Cuoco, who had previously shared many PDA-filled photos of Sweeting, has deleted all traces of him on her Instagram account.

Sweeting has followed suit.

Though Cuoco continues to post on her pseudonym account "Norman Cook".
