Dark & Stylish
Opened last month at Chijmes, Raven is a restaurant, bar and a gallery. And the decor ticks all the right trendy boxes - dark and filled with conversation-starting art pieces.
The menu, though small, works.
Chef Sam Chablani adds fun touches to his food and the plating is as stylish as the decor.
When I was invited for a meal, the service was impeccable. When I returned unannounced, I encountered a curt waiter and it went downhill after that.
Still, it was packed on a hazy Thursday night, so service is obviously not a consideration for some diners.
And here's a tip: Reject an outdoor table if you're serious about a meal. The seating may work for a drink but it's too challenging for a proper dining experience.
GLORIOUS
Chances are, you'll look at the roasted corn niblets ($12) and think you can do it at home too. You probably can't. The smokey aroma and the sweetness of the corn is a glorious combination.
Refreshing
The tuna tartare ($17) is delicious and refreshing. The avocado wasabi puree adds a touch of tart, enhanced further by the yuzu and soy vinaigrette.
CLEVER
The crispy nori-wrapped salmon ($29) is such a clever dish. It's crispy, sweet and tart in one bite. The fennel salad adds to the experience too.
JUICY
I didn't think I would like the Raven Burger ($22), but then I took a bite. I love the juiciness of the burger, with the surprise crunch of corn chips. It's a winner!
DRY
The biggest fail of the items I tried was the homemade chicken nuggets ($13). They were stone dry and the curry rub made it worse.
