Spicy stews and hearty fare at Masizzim
The mall 313@somerset could just be the place for good Korean eats along Orchard Road.
In Basement 3, next to the wildly successful Korean chicken joint Chir Chir, is Masizzim, which will hopefully become as popular.
Both Korean restaurants have the same owners but are very different.
While I love the mussel and seafood soup as well as fried chicken at Chir Chir, the offerings at Masizzim (pronounced ma-see-zim) have more potential for repeat visits.
These are hearty, full-flavoured items that are comforting any time.
The centrepiece here: the stews of varying degree of spiciness, and you order side dishes along with it.
And if you like it hot, the food is unapologetically spicy. Level 1 was hell for me, which means most of you should be able to handle it. Good luck!
SQUID & LEEK PANCAKE
When I returned to Masizzim unannounced, the Squid & Leek pancake ($14) was more crispy and tastier than during my invited tasting. It's a must-order.
PORK STEW
There are three stews (from $16) available: Chicken, pork or beef. Choose your own spiciness level and noodles. The meats were very tender and the stew was flavourful, but the sides were much better.
KIMCHI FRIED RICE
Kimchi Fried Rice ($8) is hardly unusual. This version is not spectacular but it came sizzling hot, which I appreciated.
BEEF RIBS SOUP
The beef ribs soup ($16) was surprisingly delicate and sweet, a reprieve from the heavy flavours. The meat was also tender, with the right amount of fat.
RICE BALLS
The rice balls ($8) are a lot of fun to eat. You squish the ingredients - anchovies or tuna with mayonnaise and fried kimchi - and shape them into balls. Gimmick aside, the stuffing is a winning combination.
