Weets Eats: Bursting with Flavours
The first time I ate at seafood restaurant Humpback, I was so excited I planned to return just days later. I love its spread of flavourful, unpretentious food.
The owners of Jigger & Pony and Sugarhall, who are behind this, came up with the idea after a visit to the Hama Hama oyster farm in the US Pacific Northwest.
Add the talented chef Polo Seah, 32, into the mix, and Humpback is the place for good eats.
It sells itself as a seafood restaurant, but its vegetable dishes are just too good. I hope Chef Seah will think about a vegetarian restaurant soon.
If you like it lively, Humpback sells oysters from $2 all night on Mondays, and it's packed and boisterous. You can also get them on other days during happy hours (5pm to 7pm).
MUST TRY
Of special mention is the cabbage ($10). There is a glorious touch of char, which adds dimension. It's not always available, so when you see it on the menu, order it.
SNOW CRAB
The snow crab ($23) with orzo, squash and Parmigiano may not score in the looks department, but it's very tasty. Subtle but effective.
CALAMARI
Another dish with heat is the calamari ($14). It's chewy but crispy, although less spicy when I returned unannounced.
MANGALICA PORK
The Mangalica pork ($28) is a new and welcome addition to the menu. The meat is tender to the bite and the chestnut paste is delicious.
OYSTER CHOWDER
The flavours of the oyster chowder ($22) hit you immediately. It is robust and unapologetically salty. I love it.
