American-Chinese actor Johnny Lu looks to move to S'pore
Get ready to see a lot more of American-Chinese actor Johnny Lu - he's looking to move to Singapore for good
He's lived in Los Angeles , Hong Kong and Taipei, but Johnny Lu has fallen in love with Singapore.
"People think I'm crazy, but I love it and am serious about moving here," the American-Chinese 38-year-old actor told The New Paper enthusiastically last month, on a set visit for his latest Channel 5 drama Premonition.
"There's a certain smell in the air... and I'm not talking about the food! There's just an energy here. Although my current home is in LA, when my plane landed here I felt like I'd come home. Singapore's been good to me, and I'm very grateful for that."
Local viewers last saw Lu on the small screen in 2009, when he played Michelle Chong's cheeky playboy husband in the Channel 5 comedy Sayang Sayang.
Premonition, which will air in April next year, sees him portraying Jonah, a reluctant superhero who gains the power of having premonitions of fatal accidents.
Local radio DJ Rosalyn Lee co-stars as Belinda, a police officer seeking his help but ends up being his lover, while former actress Ezann Lee plays Jonah's long-suffering wife Sasha.
"Premonition has elements of a buddy cop comedy, like Rush Hour. Jonah is Jackie Chan, because he's got powers and can actually do stuff, and Ros is Chris Tucker, because she talks a lot but really needs my help," Lu said with a laugh.
Acting projects aside, Lu released his first single, All Through The Night, in May.
"We let some random people at an MRT station in Taiwan listen to it, and they thought it was Jacky Cheung or Phil Chang singing," Lu said.
"That was quite a compliment."
The ballad is the first of five to six songs Lu plans to release as a full album later.
Meanwhile, he is looking forward to moving here and starting a family with his high school sweetheart, who has been with him for 23 years.
"It's time to get married soon, before I'm old. And I'd like to buy a house in Bukit Timah... well, maybe in my next life!"
