Actor Vic Chou proposed to girlfriend after filming new rom-com
Life imitates art for Taiwanese actor Vic Chou, who got hitched to actress Reen Yu last month
Taiwanese actor Vic Chou had been dating his girlfriend for four years and would likely have maintained the status quo - if not for his new movie.
In romantic comedy Go Lala Go 2, he plays laid-back photographer Wang Wei who is not ready for marriage despite dating human resources manager Du Lala (Ariel Lin) for years.
In a phone interview with The New Paper from Taiwan, Chou said: "Go Lala Go 2 revolves around a long-time couple who successfully iron out their niggling problems and issues. It has a good ending.
"When I was filming it, I was still unmarried and the movie's theme of marriage touched me deeply.
"It brought out my own hopes and expectations of married life."
Last month, the 34-year-old boyish-looking star announced to his fans via social media that he had tied the knot with Reen Yu, his Taiwanese actress girlfriend of four years.
He posted on Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo two pictures of them showing off their wedding bands, along with the message: "Mrs Chou is really beautiful! Yes, we got married. We thank friends for their blessings."
Chou, who catapulted to fame as the leading man in hit 2001 TV idol drama Meteor Garden and member of now-defunct boyband F4, said the couple have only registered the marriage and collected their marriage certificate, but "a wedding banquet is in the pipeline".
He revealed that he likes to keep a "low profile", adding: "We'll likely hold a wedding banquet in the future, but we will definitely not inform the media about it.
"Announcing my marriage on social media is the least I can do (as a public figure). I did it as I don't want to hide the fact that I'm married from my fans.
"However, it's hard for me to share anything that's more personal and private."
When pressed on the details of the proposal, he said: "I was the one who proposed to her, but the proposal process was not as grand and bombastic as you'd imagine.
"It was just a very simple proposal."
Chou knew Yu was the right one for him because after "spending so many years together", he was certain they could "overcome all difficulties and obstacles, big or small".
FUTURE ROLES
Getting hitched doesn't mean he'll be saying goodbye to on-screen kissing or filming intimate bed scenes.
"I'm an actor and I believe in keeping my job and personal life separate. Being married doesn't change how I pick my roles for TV and films."
Chou is the second F4 member to walk down the aisle, following Van Ness Wu, who tied the knot with Singaporean heiress Arissa Cheo in 2013.
As for the other two F4 members, Ken Chu is seeing Chinese actress Han Wenwen, while Jerry Yan is dating Taiwanese model Seanna Chang.
When it comes to marriage, Chou urged the media "not to give" his unwed buddies pressure.
"I'm sure they have their own individual plans, we should not rush them," he said firmly.
We'll likely hold a wedding banquet in the future, but we will definitely not inform the media about it.
