Nothing seems to be too daunting for actor Qi Yuwu.

Yesterday, he put on an apron and a chef's hat and sweated it out in the kitchen with the director of 1965, Randy Ang.

Qi plays a police inspector in the local historical movie, which opens here on July 30.

Treated to the lunch at the Soup Restaurant in Suntec City were 60 senior citizens from the People's Association.

Of the eight dishes on the menu, the herbal soup was his own creation, Qi told The New Paper on Sunday.

The liu wei tang (Mandarin for six-flavour soup) originates from his hometown in Guangzhou, China.

Qi's wife, actress Joanne Peh, and her parents also turned up at the restaurant to surprise Qi.

COOKING

Peh said in Mandarin: "My husband helps out with the housework and he cooks for me.

"Honestly, when he makes soup for me, I don't know what goes into it. I just drink it and tell him what I think of it."

Qi, who describes Peh as a "fierce" woman, said: "When I cook for her, I'd watch out for her facial expression to see if she is satisfied.

"I always try to please her with my cooking."

Asked if he thinks she likes his cooking, he laughed and said: "She told me that no words can describe my cooking.

"I take that as a good sign."

After Qi was done in the kitchen, he stepped out to serve the food to the elderly guests.

He conversed with them in a mixture of Mandarin and other dialects, darting from table to table to ensure everyone had their share.

Peh also mingled with the guests, who were clearly more interested in asking about her pregnancy and touching her belly.
