Thor ain't afraid of no ghost

Chris Hemsworth joins the cast of Ghostbusters

Who you gonna call?

The almighty Thor will become a receptionist in Paul Feig's reboot of Ghostbusters.

Feig announced by Twitter that Chris Hemsworth will be manning the phone for the quartet of female ghost hunters, led by Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.

This announcement has made the production even more interesting, considering that the Spy director has already flipped the gender for the 80s classic film which starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson.

In the original, the role of receptionist Janine Melnitz was played by Annie Potts. Janine also had the hots for Ramis' Egon Spengler.

Does that mean Hemsworth will be getting amorous with one of the new crew?

Hemsworth has already proven to be a bona fide action hero, and he'd had some funny moments in his Marvel movies but can he take on a fully comedy role?

We'll see if the Aussie hunk has any funny bone hidden under all those muscles in the upcoming Vacation, which opens here Sep 3.

Meanwhile, let's hope for more progressive roles for females - and for men to get some stereotypically female supporting roles too.

1) Damsel in distress

Whether it's a comedy, action flick or a drama, there is sure to be a damsel in distress who needs to be saved by a strong, dashing man.

Spider-Man's Mary Jane Watson is a prime example:

Isn't it time for a man to be flailing and screaming as the female lead battles the villian?

Even better, put someone who usually plays a man's man in the hapless role. Are you ready to scream, Mr Neeson?

Can you imagine Liam Neeson saying: "My wife will look for you, she will find you, and she will kill you."

2) Waitress

For once let's see a normal woman trying to hit on that cute waiter in the diner. Hollywood is filled with movies of that typically beautiful waitress being seduced by a man – who may or may not be creepy.

Examples include classic sitcom Friends where Rachel worked as a waitress at Central Perk. Or Vince Vaughn's attempts to tempt the waitress in Mr & Mrs Smith.

Our waiter of choice? Ryan Reynolds

He's already done the switcheroo to great effect in The Proposal playing Sandra Bullock's personal assistant.

He has the sass needed to get through a day at the diner.

He's proved himself to be a quip machine even back in his sitcom days of Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place.

Plus, with those arms he'd look good wiping down surfaces at the end of the day...Sorry, where were we?

2) Nurse

The sexy nurse is also another overused stereotype in movies.

The ones that suddenly can't help but fall for their patients. Like Liv Tyler's nurse role in Pearl Harbour.

For a quick reality check, this rarely happens because nurses see you at your absolute worst.

And depending what your ailment is, they've seen the worst that can come out of you too.

How about seeing Ben Affleck in a nurse's role?

Not that being a male nurse is weird, but in Hollywood...well, when is the last time you can remember a male nurse who wasn't, at best, comic relief.

Affleck may look permanently world-weary, but has the frame and the grin that could just be what the doctor nurse ordered.

4) The one who gets killed first in every horror flick

It is a Hollywood law that was even made fun of way back in 1996's Scream.

In horror films, there is always that sexy "chick" – usually dumb, usually blond and usually barely clothed – that gets killed first.

Men can be equally as dumb too – and we want strong, muscular men cast in that role too.

Evil doesn't discriminate!

Our nomination is Mad Max star Tom Hardy.

Him, fresh from the shower and answering a late night phone-call.

In this case we think there would be plenty of volunteers to play the stalker.
