Movie Review: Keeper Of Darkness (NC16)
If last year's Hungry Ghost Ritual was a testing ground for Hong Kong actor Nick Cheung's film-making prowess, his sophomore movie sees him settling comfortably in the director's chair.
Keeper Of Darkness, a gangster-meets-supernatural flick, follows exorcist Fatt (Cheung) as he finds himself the target of a murderous spirit (Shi Yanneng).
Meanwhile, an intrepid reporter (Sisley Choi) sees Fatt's unconventional profession as a good story and badgers him for an interview.
Fatt finds it tough to let go of a kind-hearted spirit (Amber Kuo) whom he has fallen in love with.
Low on scare tactics, the film is nevertheless a winner with its combination of suspense, romance and special effects.
If Cheung wants to quit his day job, I think he is ready.
