These freaky films will keep you awake this summer
Prepare for some sleepless nights because there are a number of twisted and disturbing horror films awaiting you.
If you're the kind of person who enjoys being scared until you wet yourself.
Here are some horror flicks that are coming your way soon.
The Vatican Tapes
Release Date: OUT NOW
Starring: Kathleen Robertson, Michael Pena, Djimon Hounsou
Why You Should See It:
The Vatican Tapes opts to make this horror look as realistic as possible.
Part of it resembles a documentary which helps add to the creepiness.
But there should be something different as director Mark Neveldine is part of the team that brought you the madness of the Crank films
In the film, a priest (Pena) tries to save a young woman's soul and soon realises that there is much more at stake.
Fans of the horror genre should know by now what to expect from a flick that deals with exorcism.
Unlike many horrors/thrillers The Vatican Tapes won't just rely on jump scares to frighten its audience.
But expect enough body horror to make you wince.
Insidious: Chapter 3
Release Date: June 11
Starring: Dermot Mulroney, Stefanie Scott, Angus Sampson and Lin Shaye
Why You Should See It:
You'll notice that Renai and Josh Lambert from the first two films, played by Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson respectively, are missing.
Well, how much torture can one couple go through.
This third chapter takes us back in time to focus on Elise Rainier, the medium who aided the Lamberts in the first two films.
Writer/director Leigh Whannell's decision to make Insidious: Chapter 3 a prequel allows him to add depth to Rainier's character by exploring her past.
It's a welcome change, and seeing how horror audiences seem to need at least five or six instalments before they become sequel fatigued, a prequel could keep the franchises blood pumping.
Poltergeist
Release Date: June 18
Starring: Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris and Jane Adams
Why You Should See It:
Yes, it's a remake of the 1982 classic.
The original was nominated for three Oscars (for the score and visual and sound effects).
The premise for this is that the most terrifying ghosts are those you cannot see. The ones that play with your mind and make you feel like you're going mad.
The original had quite a pedigree. Written by Steven Spielberg and directed by Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Tobe Hooper.
The remake has Evil Dead and Drag Me To Hell director Sam Raimi on board as producer.
The remakes director is Gil Keenan who was behind the highly underrated animation Monster House.
Sam Rockwell stars as the father of a clan who discover that their new home has some problems. Ones that go beyond poor light fittings.
As with many modern horrors, this one is filmed for 3D.
The original had something of a reputation thanks to the deaths of four cast members between the first and third films.
These spurred ridiculous rumours of a curse.
Hopefully this one just proves to be decent entertainment.
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension
Release Date: October 28
Starring: Jason Pagan, Kathie Featherson and Andrew Stark
Why You Should See It:
The series that continues to haunt cinemas. Paranormal Activity (2009) was shot on a budget of just $15,000 but earned a whopping $193.4 million at the box office.
That popularity meant plenty of sequels.
The Ghost Dimension is the sixth entry in the series and is set to continue the trend of giving even the biggest horror fans sleepless nights.
This one follows the found footage journey of a young family who just moved in to their recently completed Palo Alto home.
Oh look. There's an odd symbol on the door (that to be honest is just a line away from being the Deathly Hallows symbol from Harry Potter).
Lots of walking round with video cameras unable to find family members in the dark.
In the cold light of text, does not seem too scary. But once you get watching...
