THE SONG:
Come As You Are
THE ARTIST:
Nirvana
THE LYRICS:
Come as you are, as you were/As I want you to be/As a friend, as a friend/As an old enemy
THE RESULTS:
Come As You Are was the US grunge band's second US Top 40 hit and second UK Top 10 hit.
It spent 18 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Come As You Are has been widely covered by a range of artists including Malaysian singer Yuna, US sister duo The Pierces, and South African rock band Civil Twilight.
THAT WAS THEN...
Come As You Are was off Nirvana's second album Nevermind (1991), their first major-label release.
With this chart-topping album, the band shot to mainstream success, playing sold-out shows and shifting 30 million copies of the record worldwide.
A third album, In Utero, followed in 1993. In April the following year, Nirvana's singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home with a shotgun wound to his head.
THIS IS NOW...
Last week, Nirvana's surviving members drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and live guitarist Pat Smear performed their songs together for the first time in more than 20 years. The special reunion was in light of their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They were also joined by Joan Jett, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, St. Vincent's Annie Clark, and Lorde, who filled in for Cobain.
Novoselic later said in a blog post: "I feel we conjured the spirit of the band, and we could not have done that alone. This, for me, is a bittersweet notion as we all miss Kurt so much."
