300-tonne MRT span falls, 3 workers feared dead in M'sia
Three workers are missing and feared dead after a 38m long concrete span fell to the ground at the construction site of the Malaysia's Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit project near Kota Damansara, a town near Kuala Lumpur on Monday night ( Aug 18)
The concrete span weighing 300 tonnes, fell to the ground after becoming dislodged from it's supporting structure, reported The Star Online.
MRT Corporation, the company that is building the new train network, confirmed that three construction workers are missing.
“Three workers are unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped underneath. Rescue efforts are currently on-going and an emergency response team is on standby at the site,” it said in a statement.
A check on the social account of the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia showed their officers on scene conducting search and rescue operations.
According to The Star Online, the three missing workers are Bangladeshi nationals, Mohamad Faruk Khan, Mohammad Elahi Hussain and Mohammad Alauddin Mollik.
The Chief Executive Officer of MRT Corp, Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid, who was on the scene, said that his company assumes full responsibility of the incident and that "actions will be taken" against those responsible, once investigations are completed.
In July 2014, he had warned contractors working on the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit to improved their safety standards to prevent any construction-related deaths.
