7 die in China as parents, siblings jump into reservoir to save drowning teen

Seven people drowned in a reservoir on Sunday in China’s Guangdong province, said local authorities.

The tragedy happened around noon in Chaoyang district in the city of Shantou.

A 17-year-old girl fell into the water while washing her hands, according to a statement from the provincial emergency response office.

Seven of her family members, including her parents, younger brother and younger sister, jumped in to try and rescue her.

But six of them drowned, according to the statement. The teen died as well.

Their bodies were recovered at 4pm.

The family had just finished sweeping their ancestors' tombs as part of the Qing Ming Festival when the tragedy happened.
