'Are you the one bullying my friend?': Man jailed for wielding saw in tenant dispute

He pleaded guilty to one charge of possessing an offensive weapon.

A man who brandished a 30cm saw during a confrontation with his friend's tenant was sentenced to 11 weeks' jail on Aug 18.

Yang Peiqing (transliterated), 34, pleaded guilty to one charge of possessing an offensive weapon.

According to a report by Shin Min Daily News, Yang, who runs a contracting company called "Handy Panda Services" with his fiancée, was roped in by his friend, 23-year-old contractor Kuldeep (transliterated), over a tenancy quarrel.

The victim, a 24-year-old international student named Ajay (transliterated), had been renting a room from Kuldeep at the time.

Days before the incident, the pair had a disagreement over the number of tenants, and Ajay had requested to end his lease.

On Oct 22, 2024, just past midnight, Yang drove Kuldeep back to his house and left after dropping him off. Kuldeep then met with Ajay to discuss the tenancy agreement.

But after 10 to 15 minutes, Kuldeep - unnerved by Ajay's agitation and the presence of at least two of his friends - called Yang back for help.

Saw brandished in confrontation

Yang returned and drove with Kuldeep to find Ajay and his friends.

When they located the group, Yang retrieved a saw with a 30cm-long blade from the back of his vehicle, and confronted the group after Kuldeep pointed out Ajay.

Pointing the saw at the group, Yang demanded: "Are you the one bullying my friend?"

Witnessing the scene, one of Ajay's friends immediately called the police, and Yang was arrested the same day.

In court, Yang's lawyer said Yang was remorseful and had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. The lawyer also noted that Yang has Type 1 diabetes and asked the judge for a lighter sentence.
