Bangladesh ferry carrying hundreds sinks
A ferry capsized and sank in Bangladesh after being caught in a storm, leaving at least six dead and hundreds more missing, officials said.
District government administrator Saiful Hasan said: “We are receiving confusing figures on how many passengers were on board when it sank, but the number could range from 200 to 350.”
The incident took place around 3.30pm on the Meghna river in Munshiganj district, some 50km south of the capital Dhaka.
The ferry had been heading to Shariatpur from Dhaka.
“The ferry is completely under water. We are now trying to locate it,” local police chief Ferdous Ahmed Ahmed said.
He added that a salvage vessel and fire service divers were headed there.
