This article is more than 12 months old

A car went up in flames at a carpark at the foot of Block 76, Lorong Limau in Balestier yesterday evening.

The owner of the Nissan Cefiro, a man in his early 30s, said he parked it next to a van, turned off the engine and sat on a bench at the void deck.

"I was waiting for my wife to finish work at NKF (National Kidney Foundation) and I was just looking down at my phone.

"The next thing I knew, my entire car was in flames," the owner, who did not want to be named, said. "I don't even know how it happened."

The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted at 6.30pmand put out the fire with two water jets.

While he escaped injury, the car owner couldn't help but wonder what might have been. "Imagine if I had waited in the car? I could have been in that fire. I could have been dead," he said.

The van was also damaged in the fire.
