Car hits cyclist, rear-ends bus in Jalan Besar crash; driver allegedly flees the scene

A driver allegedly fled the scene after a collision in Jalan Besar involving a car, a bicycle and a bus - leaving the front of the car wrecked and a cyclist injured.

The incident took place around 6pm on May 27 in Jalan Besar, in the direction of Bencoolen Street.

In a video shared online, a silver car is seen lodged into the rear of a bus at a bus stop. The car's front is crumpled, while the bus doors are left open with no passengers onboard.

Several netizens questioned how the accident occurred, given the narrowness of the road and the size of the bus, which appeared to be properly parked at the stop.

In response to queries, the police confirmed that they had received a report of a hit-and-run involving a bicycle, a car and a bus.

A 40-year-old male cyclist was taken to hospital conscious. Police investigations are ongoing.

It is understood that the car first struck the cyclist before ramming into the rear of the bus.

The driver did not remain at the scene, and the authorities are believed to be working to track them down.

SMRT Buses Deputy Managing Director Vincent Gay told Shin Min Daily News that Bus Service 67 was stationary at the bus stop when it was rear-ended.

Fortunately, no passengers were hurt in the incident.

"Safety is our top priority," Mr Gay said, adding that the bus captain ensured all passengers disembarked safely and were transferred to another bus to continue their journey.

He added that SMRT is assisting police with their investigation.
