In a video shared in Facebook group SGRV on March 14, a bus is seen approaching a bus stop and four Yusof Ishak Secondary School students dash from the opposite side of the road in an attempt to catch the bus.

The dashcam footage shows the driver stopping just in time to avoid hitting two students dashing in front of the vehicle.

The blare of a horn can also be heard in the clip.

Another student continued to run across the road while the fourth stepped back onto the road divider to make way for the car.

When The New Paper visited the location on March 24, at least 10 students were seen jaywalking in front of Yusof Ishak Secondary School in Punggol between 2pm and 3pm, crossing the roads to get to the bus stop.

"I just jaywalk here because it's faster than taking a detour to the traffic light," a Secondary 2 student told The New Paper.

"Anyway, many of my friends do the same."

There is a traffic light about 100m from the school gate.

There were also students who crossed at the kerb-cut ramp just a few steps away from the bus stop.

A kerb-cut ramp has a section of the kerbs and road divider removed to enable residents with mobility aids, wheelchairs or prams to cross the road more smoothly.

Yusof Ishak Secondary School principal Chen Ziyang told Shin Min Daily News that the school was aware of the jaywalking video.

"We will be communicating and counselling students and working with parents to help them become more aware of road safety," said Mr Chen.

"The safety of our students is of the utmost importance and the school will continue to work with parents to remind and educate students to use the roads safely."

Netizens were divided over the video, with some insisting the driver was driving too fast in a School Zone where there is a reduced speed limit of 40kmh.

Meanwhile, others maintained that the students should not be jaywalking and dashing across the roads.
