Cheng San Public Library will be shuttered for almost two years while it undergoes a revamp as part of the National Library Board's (NLB) efforts to transform its libraries.

The library, located in Hougang Mall, will be closed from Oct 1, said NLB on March 3, adding that the revamp will create a bigger space for reading and learning, along with design features inspired from the sights and scenes in the area.

When it reopens in the first half of 2027, it will be relocated to the fifth floor of the mall, from its current spot on the third.

NLB said the move enables the library, which now occupies 1,467 sq m of space, to have a bigger one of around 2,500 sq m at the new location.

More details will be shared at a later date, said NLB.

"The library's revamp is part of the NLB's ongoing efforts to systematically rejuvenate our existing libraries. It is also being carried out in tandem with Frasers Centrepoint Trust's Asset Enhancement Initiative for Hougang Mall," the board said.

The library, which opened in 1997, will operate till Sept 30, after which patrons can explore alternative services to continue their reading experiences.

For example, there will be a Browse-n-Borrow kiosk in Hougang Mall, where readers can select and browse physical books before checking them out using a library-compliant card or the NLB mobile app.

The kiosk can hold up to 550 physical books and 100 reservations at any time.

Aside from accessing NLB's collections via its app, readers can also use Borrow-n-Deliver, a service that enables four library items such as books, magazines and other materials to be delivered to their homes.

This service, which costs $8.72, is accessible via NLB's e-catalogue only when the materials are available and not on loan, NLB said.

Alternatively, patrons can also visit other nearby libraries, such as the Punggol Regional Library and two other public libraries in Sengkang and Serangoon, said NLB.

Borrowed materials can be returned at other libraries during Cheng San Public Library's revamp.

Mr Ng Cher Pong, NLB's chief executive officer, said: "The library has been serving the community well for more than 28 years, and many have fond memories and experiences there. We will work closely with partners and the community to shape it, and develop a new space that will offer an enhanced experience for patrons of all ages."
