Authorities from China's Henan Province say a woman has been prosecuted for selling her own baby.

The woman, only named as Huang, had conspired with a doctor from a clinic in Xinxiang county to sell her newborn baby for 42,000 yuan (S$9,060).

In Aug 2014, Huang's mother-in-law went to the police and claimed that her grandson had been sold, reported Xinhua.

Huang had told told her family that the baby died soon after birth.

Her lie was revealed when a relative discovered that the boy had actually been sold.

According to Xinhua, she was often quarrelling with her current husband and she was worried that her new baby would have a negative impact on the life of her first child from a previous marriage.

She paid the doctor 7,000 yuan to help her find a couple to buy her newborn.

The doctor was also prosecuted.

The boy is now in the care of his grandmother while the Chinese authorities carry out further investigations.
