Ms Angela Brower, 37, then took the brave decision of breaking up with the man, Walter Bradley, after a six-month relationship.
But when he went to her house in Tennessee, US, to collect his things on May 18, he attacked her again, Mail Online reported.
She was punched so hard in the face that she was knocked out. She woke up after a while to find him beating her in the back of the head.
She pleaded with him to spare her life, and when he stopped she managed to escape.
Local television channel WREG News Channel 3 said he has been charged with aggravated assault and his bail has been set at US$20,000 (S$25,000).
Ms Brower posted pictures of her injuries and her recovery on her Facebook page.
She wrote: “Does this look like love to you?”
She told The Huffington Post: “I made a mistake and I took him back, and everything was okay for a little while. If you have never been there, you can’t understand why people go back.”
Late last month, she underwent surgery to remove bone fragments from her face and to place a metal ring around her eye to stop it from collapsing, according to her posts.
The bottom left side of her face is still completely numb, and Ms Brower said doctors say she may be unable to feel that part of her face again.
