'Epitome of out of touch': MP Cassandra Lee slammed online for saying it is 'best time' to raise a family

"Maybe it's the best time for her because she's getting MP salary now," one commenter wrote.

Netizens have slammed Member of Parliament for West Coast-Jurong West GRC Cassandra Lee as "out of touch" after her maiden parliamentary speech on Sept 24.

A Reddit thread that declared she was "talking rubbish in parliament" drew over 140 comments, with many criticising Ms Lee for telling the House that it is the "best time in Singapore to start and raise a family".

She made the claim even while acknowledging that young parents today are "stretched" by career demands, caregiving responsibilities, costs, and the unpredictability of early childhood.

In her speech, she emphasised the central role of families in building the "we first" society envisioned by the President and Prime Minister, and said the government is "listening, learning, and determined to act".

Ms Lee added that she would play her part by speaking on policies that strengthen families.

'Epitome of out of touch'

In response, online commentators labelled Ms Lee as the "epitome of out of touch" and "disconnected" to society.

One comment read, "maybe it's the best time for her because she's getting MP salary now."

Another highlighted her age and earnings, noting that at 34, she earns a substantial salary while others in their 40s are losing their jobs. "Of course can talk big la," the commenter added.

"Can she have a word with Jeffrey first on the impossibly expensive cars and trains that keep breaking down?" another wrote.
