Ex-cabby who killed girlfriend's 3-year-old child escapes death penalty
He kicked and stepped on his girlfriend's three-year-old girl, killing her.
Then he lied that she had fallen from his motorcycle.
Found guilty of murder, the former taxi driver has escaped the gallows.
The Federal Court upheld an 18-year jail term imposed on Mohd Fazli Azri Jamil for manslaughter.
Justice Abdull Hamid Embong, who chaired a five-man panel, yesterday dismissed the prosecution’s appeal to impose the death penalty on the Malaysian.
Sentenced to death
Mohd Fazli was sentenced to hang on Sept 22, 2010, but the Court of Appeal overturned the verdict and found him guilty of manslaughter instead in July 2013.
Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Tengku Amir Zaki Tengku Abd Rahman said that Mohd Fazli had caused the death of Syafiah Humaira Sahari by kicking and stepping on her with his football boots.
The girl’s mother, a sales assistant, told the media then that she still loved Mohd Fazli.
He had loved her daughter very much, she added.
He was 28 at the time.
