Family seeks witnesses after SLE hit-and-run leaves rider, 59, seriously injured
A 43-year-old motorist is currently assisting with investigations.
The family of a 59-year-old motorcyclist is appealing for eyewitnesses to come forward after he was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident on the Seletar Expressway (SLE) on Sept 15.
The accident occurred at 11.10am along the SLE towards Tampines Expressway (TPE) before the Woodlands Avenue 12 exit. The victim, identified as Hamzah Kasmuri, was riding his motorcycle at the time.
His wife Nurtasha, a 39-year-old secretary, told Shin Min Daily News that it had started to rain that morning when her husband was on his way to work.
STOMP was also alerted to the accident when a reader shared an Instagram story posted by Ms Nurtasha that appealed for eyewitnesses.
"A bus had moved into the right lane from the left, so my husband slowed down to give way. That's when a car crashed into his bike from behind, flinging him onto the road," she recounted.
The driver did not stop after the collision, fleeing the scene immediately.
"The accident happened so suddenly that my husband couldn't identify the vehicle. He believes it was either white or beige, travelling at a high speed," she recalled.
Ms Nurtasha said Mr Hamzah landed on his left side and tried to stand up, but was unable to walk.
"He had injured his left ankle and was left sitting on the road. Two kind individuals stopped to help - one, a doctor, immediately called an ambulance. Another motorcyclist also assisted. We are very grateful to them."
Police investigations ongoing
Ms Nurtasha said that the driver should have stopped to check on her husband and offered assistance. "We hope any eyewitnesses will come forward with information," she added.
In response to queries from The New Paper, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that they were alerted to a hit-and-run accident involving a car and a motorcycle.
A 59-year-old male motorcyclist was conscious when taken to Woodlands Health Campus, and a 43-year-old male car driver is assisting with investigations.
Six weeks of recovery for victim
Mr Hamzah underwent surgery the following day, during which a metal pin was inserted into his ankle.
He is currently recovering and will be unable to walk for at least six weeks.
Ms Nurtasha added that it has been an "incredibly difficult" month for the family as they are still mourning the loss of her brother-in-law, who died from an illness on 7 Sept.
