Former Mr World Singapore charged again for drink driving

Given this is not his first offence, the prosecution has urged the court to impose a jail sentence.

A former Mr World Singapore finalist has been charged for drink driving, for the second time, with prosecutors calling for a jail sentence.

Hu Hanxiong, 40, who represented Singapore in the Mr World 2010 competition, was charged in court on July 3. He is accused of driving under the influence near Peace Centre on Sophia Road towards Wilkie Road at 11.53pm on Aug 19, 2022.

His breath alcohol level was measured at 94 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath - more than double the legal limit of 35 micrograms.

This is not his first offence. Hu was previously convicted of drink driving on Sept 23, 2015.

Given his repeated offence, the prosecution has urged the court to impose a jail sentence of three to four months, a fine of between $14,000 and $15,000, and a driving ban of eight years.

Hu did not indicate a plea and has requested time to seek legal advice. The case has been adjourned to July 31. He is currently out on $15,000 bail.

Hu first made headlines when he represented Singapore in the Mr World finals held in Incheon, South Korea in March 2010.

At the time, a self-introduction video he submitted for the competition - which featured nervous delivery and several grammatical errors - went viral online. It drew widespread mockery from netizens, who likened him to "the male version of Ris Low".
