The 365 Cancer Prevention Society returns with its #My1stColonoscopy free screening campaign in its fight against colorectal cancer, the second-most common cancer among both men and women in Singapore.

Running until April 30, this initiative, in partnership with Icon Cancer Centre, provides fully sponsored colonoscopies for eligible lower-income individuals aged 45 to 70.

Colorectal cancer, which develops in the colon or rectum, is often a silent disease with no early symptoms.

According to the Singapore Cancer Registry Annual Report 2022, it accounts for approximately 1,400 new cases annually, with a lifetime risk of 5.6 per cent among Singaporeans.

Common symptoms include rectal bleeding, persistent bowel changes, unexplained weight loss, and abdominal discomfort. But if detected early, colorectal cancer is highly preventable and treatable, with survival rates improving by over 70 per cent.

"#My1stColonoscopy was introduced in 2022 to make effective and reliable screenings accessible to lower-income individuals," said Mr Andrew Soh, 365CPS assistant director for Fundraising, Marketing and Volunteer Management.

"Now in its fourth year, the campaign continues to remove financial barriers to encourage people to take charge of their health.

"Early detection saves lives - diagnosing colorectal cancer early can improve survival rates by over 70 per cent and make a life-changing difference in overcoming the disease."

Beyond screenings, lifestyle choices play a crucial role in prevention.

"A balanced diet rich in fibre, fruits and vegetables can help reduce the risk of developing the disease and support overall health during treatment," shared 365CPS senior dietitian Jocelyn Fong.

"Proper nutrition not only enhances quality of life, but also strengthens the immune system and maintains energy levels for those undergoing treatment."

Individuals who meet the following criteria are eligible for a free colonoscopy:

  • Aged 45 to 70 years old
  • Holders of a valid blue or orange Chas card or Public Assistance card
  • Have not undergone a colonoscopy in the past five years

To register, members of the public can visit the 365CPS website at bit.ly/my1stcolonoscopy or contact community partners.
