French tourist missing in Tioman while snorkelling

This article is more than 12 months old

A police search is on for another tourist in Tioman Island in Malaysia.

French national Jerome Philippe Laurent, 24, went missing after going snorkelling in front of the Berjaya Tioman Resort.

His disappearance comes three months after Briton Gareth David Huntley was found dead following a jungle trek.

Alarm raised same day

Laurent had apparently gone snorkeling at about 3pm on Tuesday. Concerned when he still had not returned by 5.30pm, his friend raised the alarm.

The police then launched a search that day, which was later called off as it was getting dark.

The search continued yesterday with a team of 26 people from the police and fire and rescue department.

State police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Sharifuddin Abdul Ghani said that they will devote their resources to locate Laurent.

He also urged those participating in sea activities like snorkelling to go in pairs to avoid any unfortunate incidents.
