Giraffe dies after striking head against bridge while being taken in open truck
A giraffe was killed in Johannesburg after it struck its head on a bridge while being transported in an open truck.
Motorists had seen two blindfolded giraffes with their necks sticking out of an open container along the South African city's N1 motorway as it approached a low-hanging bridge.
A vet, who described the dead animal as young, confirmed that it had "died due to head injuries".
South African personality Pabi Moloi, who had seen the giraffes being transported, tweeted:
Mr Rick Allan, managing director of the Tshwane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said: "We're very concerned about the way it was transported. Most definitely there has been negligence.
"Our investigations so far showed that the transport used was inadequate and incorrect.
"There are lots of projectiles flying around on the highway (and) especially leaving an animal with its head sticking out blindfolded, is looking for problems."
