Girl, 6, darts across road and gets killed

This article is more than 12 months old

She was so excited to see her dad in the car across the road that she ran onto the usually quiet British suburban road without looking.

Little Lara Fernandes-Pontes, six, did not notice the oncoming Land Rover which rammed into her on Sunday at South Oxhey, Hertfordshire, where she was attending a friend's birthday party.

The girl was flown to hospital by an air ambulance crew but could not be saved, reported Daily Mail.

A cousin of Lara posted this picture on Facebook and said: "RIP little (angel)!!"

Neighbour Carlos Alves, 51, said: "The little girl had just been at a friend’s party, there were lots of kids around.

"It’s very shocking and very, very sad."

"The emergency services came and then I found out she had died. It’s tragic."

Another cousin changed her Facebook profile picture to remember Lara.

Hertfordshire policeman Chris Kent said: "This is a tragic loss of a young life in these circumstances. The family are being supported by specialist officers at this difficult time."

"The driver and the occupants of the vehicle were unharmed but obviously shaken by what happened."

Police are appealing for more witnesses.
