Groom-to-be killed in crash during ride to father's grave
A 27-year-old man, who was on his way to the cemetery to pay respects to his late father, was killed in a traffic accident after his motorcycle collided with a van at a junction in Sembawang.
Mr Muhammad Syakir Rosley, who worked in IT, was riding along Sembawang Road at about 2.45pm on May 14 when a van reportedly made a turn into Lorong Chencharu when the two vehicles collided.
The impact threw Mr Syakir off his motorcycle and he sustained serious injuries. He was unconscious when taken to hospital, where he later died.
The van driver, a 75-year-old man, was arrested for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Mr Syakir's fiancée, 27-year-old Yunn Woo, told Shin Min Daily News: "Whenever he missed his dad, he would ride there to pay his respects. We didn't expect something like this to happen on the way."
She explained that Mr Syakir used the Life360 app to share his real-time location with a group of close friends.
One friend received an alert that Mr Syakir had been in a crash and noticed his location had not changed for some time.
The friend rushed to the scene and found Mr Syakir badly injured. He immediately alerted Ms Woo, who then informed Mr Syakir's family.
They rushed to the hospital, but it was too late.
Ms Woo said that based on what the investigating officer told her, Mr Syakir was riding on the left lane of Sembawang Road when the van turned right into Lorong Chencharu.
The two vehicles collided at the junction.
Photos from the scene showed Mr Syakir's motorcycle lying on its side with debris scattered across the road. His helmet had come off and was found behind the motorcycle.
The front of the van was visibly dented.
"Our whole family is devastated. We hope that anyone who saw what happened will contact the police to help with the investigation," said Ms Woo.
In response to queries from The New Paper, the police confirmed that the motorcyclist had been found unconscious and taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
