Has your number of Instagram followers fallen? Don't panic. Fake followers have been purged

This article is more than 12 months old

Warning. The purge has happened.

If you woke up to find that your number of Instagram followers has plummeted, don't panic.

The photo-sharing site has pulled the plug on deactivated spam accounts and accounts that violated service guidelines.

Goodbye, fake followers. Au revoir, spambots.

Not everyone is happy with the clean-up.

Rapper Ma$e deleted his account after most of his followers vanished – from 1.6 million followers to around 270,000.

Think that's bad? A little-known user called chiragchirag78 had three million followers before the purge. It dropped to a measly eight. That account has since been deleted.

It isn't just lesser-known celebs that are bleeding numbers – Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez have each lost at least a million followers. The only difference? They aren't crying about it.
