This article is more than 12 months old

It's a head-turning way to stay anonymous.

Fifteen customs officers being remanded at the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court created a scene yesterday morning when some of them donned underwear over their faces.

The reason: They wanted to hide their identities.

Contraband smuggling

The 15 were among those arrested during the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) investigations into alleged smuggling of cigarettes and alcohol, which involved hundreds of millions of ringgit worth of contraband items, The Star reported.

They were arrested on Sept 18, and are expected to be remanded until Sept 29.

The 15 are being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering Act and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2010.

To date, Customs director Datuk Mohd Nasir Said and nine other officers have been charged in various Sessions courts, with dozens more still being investigated.
