HK grandpa takes baby and jumps to death

This article is more than 12 months old

A 68-year-old grandfather in Hong Kong told his family earlier this week that he was thinking of committing suicide.

In a case where alarm bells should have gone off, no one took heed of the old man's words.

Later that day, he took his 13-month old grandson and jumped off the apartment building's 13th floor.

Police are investigating if the elderly man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and whether he may have thrown his grandson down first before jumping himself.

According to the South China Morning Post, Chief Inspector Tam Wai-shun said both were unconscious when paramedics arrived at the scene in Kowloon, Hong Kong. They were taken to the hospital where they were certified dead.

He said: "Our initial investigations found that (the neighbours) heard no argument from the flat (before the incident)."

He added that the old man had no history of mental illness and his family of five had no record of domestic violence.

Medics found the grandfather lying on the terrace above the building's ground-floor entrance while the baby was found about 10m away from his grandfather on a podium on the estate's badminton court.
