How much is your virginity worth? $6,200, says Chinese court
You can't put a price on love. But you can put a price on your virginity.
A woman in China sued her ex-boyfriend for "violating her right to virginity" after he wooed her with false promises, reports said on Wednesday.
The Pudong New Area People's Court awarded her 30,000 yuan (S$6,200) in compensation.
The pair met online in 2009, but only began dating in September last year.
Three months after a trip to Singapore, during which the couple had sex, the man suddenly broke off contact with the woman.
Pretended to be single
In February, the 35-year-old woman, whose surname is Chen, broke into the man's home and found him with his wife, whom he had married in January last year.
Miss Chen then sued the man, whose surname is Li, for swindling her out of her virginity, accusing him of pretending to be single and pledging to make her his wife, Shanghai media said.
She demanded more than 500,000 yuan in psychological damages and around 1,500 yuan for medical costs.
The court found the original demand "excessive", but said in its ruling that the "right to virginity" should be protected by law as it was a "moral right" related to "sexual freedom, sexual safety and sexual purity".
"Violating the right to virginity might lead to harm to a person’s body, health, freedom and reputation... it ought to be compensated," the court said, though it did not explain how it reached the figure of 30,000 yuan.
The man did not appear in court, but through a lawyer he denied having sex with the woman. He has appealed the ruling.
