Dhoby Ghaut landmark The Cathay is set to reopen its doors "soon" after undergoing extensive renovations, Cathay Malls announced on March 19.

The much-anticipated return comes after the initially projected late 2024 reopening date.

The mall has been closed since August 2023 for its first major revamp since 2003.

A recent Facebook reel by Cathay Malls teased the imminent reopening, showcasing youngsters holding signs around Dhoby Ghaut with messages like, "It is happening", "Your favourite mall is back & BETTER!" and "Opening Soon!"

One individual stood prominently in front of The Cathay's iconic lifts with a sign reading, "See you at The Cathay!"

The accompanying caption promised that the wait "will be over soon".

This refurbishment follows the closure of The Cathay Cineplex in June 2022 after 83 years of operation, temporarily replaced by The Projector.

The Cathay Building holds significant historical value, having been gazetted as a national monument in 2003.

The building's distinctive Art Deco facade, featuring rounded and stepped walls and its vertical "Cathay" signage, has been preserved throughout the renovation process.

The rest of the building, however, has been subject to refurbishment, resulting in what some observers describe as a blend of retro and modern aesthetics.

The building was previously redeveloped and reopened in 2006 with a multiplex.

Cathay Organisation sold it to mm2 Asia in 2017 amidst a decline in the cinema business, though they reportedly still retain ownership of The Cathay Building itself.
